The two legends showed up to bid Colbert and the Late Show a fond adieu, but not before unloading on the politics that drove a Trump-servile CBS to cancel the decade-long late night staple despite its consistently stellar ratings.
Closing out the show, New Jersey’s favorite son directly laid in to the notoriously thin-skinned Trump:
“I am here tonight in support of Stephen because you’re the first guy in America who’s lost his show because we’ve got a president who can’t take a joke.”
He then let the string-pulling father-and-son duo at Paramount Global have it:
“Larry and David Ellison feel they need to kiss [Trump’s] ass to get what they want. Stephen, these are small-minded people. They’ve got no idea what the freedoms of this beautiful country are supposed to be about.”
DeNiro’s condemnation came as he took a question from Colbert’s famous “Questionert,” when answering “What number are you thinking of?”
“I thought it would’ve been two million point five, or two and a half million. That’s the number of Epstein files Trump still hasn’t released.”
The star-studded farewell felt like a final defiant stand against MAGAs criminally authoritarian crackdown on late night comedy and free speech itself.
The White House, of course, couldn’t resist responding in typical fashion, inspired by, if not actually composed by Steven “Odd Job” Cheung:
“Stephen Colbert is a pathetic trainwreck with no talent and terrible ratings, which is exactly why CBS canceled his show.”
Colbert’s poignant sendoff has reminded millions why so many artists and entertainers view the current administration as a threat to creative freedom and basic decency.
While Trump obsesses over late-night jokes, Colbert’s fans and friends, including two of the most iconic figures in American culture, reminded everyone what real courage and patriotism look like.
Colbert may have stepped down from his latest platform, but we know his voice won’t be silenced. This country’s freedoms are worth defending, and Colbert did so by standing up for the values that truly make America great.
